Facebook a Great Resource for Thieves

Facebook is one of the most incredible resources on the Web – it brings together friends, families, business associates, and has given rise to an entire industry (primarily zynga :) for which we all have to thank. And hey, its still free!

But it still amazes me how many people will fret about the turning off every light before going on vacation, then will submit pictures from Hawaii so that every burglar knows they’re not home.

shadows are ominous..

And the pictures of them & friends at the Christmas party wearing expensive jewelry or watches, or charity car washes in expensive cars won’t decrease the chances that these folks become prime “leads” for burglars. While Facebook doesn’t list addresses, there are plenty of online database companies that can help thieves figure out where one lives.

Here’s what we can do to continue to enjoy Facebook for the awesome tool it is, but to be wary that thieves are wise to social media now:

1) Go into your account settings and turn your privacy settings so that only friends or friends of friends can see the recent pictures you are posting. This does NOT mean you have to make your profile invisible, we can continue to enjoy the ability for business associates and long lost friends to find us by making profiles public, but adjust the privacy settings so that the Wall and Photo Albums are not live to public view when on vacation.

2) Post pics of Hawaii after Hawaii. That goes about tweeting about how beautiful Maui is while you’re still in Maui!

Frank Chu – Crazy, or Crazy as a Fox?

As most anyone that goes out once in a while in the city of San Francisco (and who here doesn’t?) knows – Frank Chu, the Asian-American dude with the sign about “12 Galaxies….” and other incoherent jibberish (or is it?) is EVERYWHERE. You literally bump into him at concerts, rallies, movie theatres, restaurants, etc.  Apparently, he has no job, and this all he does. All day. And all of the night.

He simply stands there quietly holding his sign. Some local companies have started paying him to brandish their corporate messaging on the other side of his sign. Thanks to the Frank Cu sign generator from Sfist for making this dream widget come true, now anyone can do this:

Frank Chu won't be ignored. Frank Chu won't be denied. Frank Chu is Foxy. Like a Cat.

So my coworker bought an iPad..

It’s beautiful. And I really can see myself using the iPad to download books instead of actually reading a “real book” (from Amazon). BUT:

- it won’t let me plug in my AT&T USB wifi card into the iPad because it doesn’t support it and has no USB port. After all the money Att&T and Apple have managed to get from me, I feel like customers deserve this, even if the iPad sits outside the confines of any telco.

- the iPad doesn’t support Flash. So the iPad doesn’t support FLEX. Which won’t support my app. FCUK. Thanks for pushing your agenda down our throats.. we get it, we’re re-engineering… can I just mention too though that a lot of websites who have flash (especially the ones with great content supported by ads) will give users a “broken experience,” i.e. you will see lots of odd things in odd boxes in odd places.

- no built-in camera means no built-in web conferencing. This puzzles me because Steve Jobs said that the iPad would make netbooks obsolete. But Steve, my netbook has a camera so I can video-conference to work on the road.

- The iPhone apps look kind of like a joke on the iPad (the app is the same dimension from iPhone to iPad) but I assume this will be resolved rather quickly as the 3rd party market of app vendors quickly rush in to fill this gap with iPad specific dimensions for their UI.

Also, the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD rumors have me wondering if I should wait to spend my money with APPL again… what can I say, despite all my gripes, Steve Jobs inventions continue to fascinate us all.
